Our goal is simple: predict how warm you’ll actually sleep. We use a sleep‑system‑first methodology that blends field nights with instrumentation and transparent modeling. Every recommendation is grounded in our Real Warmth Index, which translates ISO/EN bag ratings into real‑world outcomes by factoring pad R‑value, shelter type, humidity, wind exposure, fit, and your hot/cold sleeper profile.

Test Protocols at a Glance

  • Field Nights Across Climates: Alpine shoulder seasons, humid coasts, arid deserts, winter tree line, and family campgrounds.
  • Standardized Baselines: We test with known pad R‑values, typical sleepwear (base layers + socks + beanie), and controlled shelter types (double‑wall tent, single‑wall/tarp, bivy, hammock).
  • Instrumentation: Temperature and humidity loggers placed at chest and footbox; periodic wind readings; bag interior delta vs ambient; moisture accumulation after multi‑night runs.
  • Fit & Position Checks: Side, back, stomach sleepers; broad shoulders/curvy hips; draft control with zippers, collars, and pad attachments.

Real Warmth Index (RWI)

  • Inputs: ISO/EN rating, measured loft, pad R‑value, shelter type, ambient humidity/wind exposure, bag construction (down vs synthetic, baffles, draft tubes), user profile (hot/neutral/cold sleeper), and fit modifiers (girth vs body dimensions).
  • Output: A practical comfort band (e.g., “for a cold sleeper with R 4.5 pad in a double‑wall tent: comfortable to ~28°F”) plus safety margins for wind spikes and wet nights.
  • Validation: We correlate RWI predictions with logged field nights and adjust coefficients seasonally as more data accumulates.

Product Selection & Comparables We prioritize widely available models, strong value options, and notable innovations. New or niche products may be included as comparables with clear labels until we complete hands‑on validation.

Scoring & Recommendations

  • Warmth‑to‑Weight: Normalized by verified weight and RWI comfort band.
  • Fit & Comfort: Girth distribution, collar/hood efficacy, zipper snag/draft control, fabric hand.
  • Moisture Management: Shell DWR, hydrophobic down, synthetic resilience, venting, and dry‑out rates.
  • System Synergy: How well the bag pairs with common pads, liners, bivy/tents, and hammock setups.
  • Durability & Care: Stitching, baffle integrity, zipper longevity, and ease of cleaning/restoration.

Hammock & Quilt Testing We run dedicated sessions for underquilts/topquilts with common suspension systems and evaluate pad compatibility for hybrid users. Draft control and diagonal lay comfort are key metrics.

Winter & Wet‑Weather Protocols Cold‑soaked starts, staged condensation exposure, and snow‑melt contact tests help us assess moisture creep and recovery. We document performance penalties and mitigation strategies (liners, VBLs, overbags).

Verification & Weights We weigh gear on calibrated scales, confirm dimensions where feasible, and disclose any deviations from spec. Any modifications (e.g., aftermarket zipper pulls) are noted.

Independence & Samples We buy most products at retail. When brands provide samples, we disclose it and apply the same test protocol. Loaners don’t receive preferential treatment. Brands do not get copy approval.
